About the project

IN PROGRESS

Mова [mova] means Ukrainian language. Movapp is a language training app.

Movapp.cz is a project that was created as part of the Stand for Ukraine initiative in the community of expert volunteers of Česko.Digital.

The aim of Movapp.cz is to facilitate communication between Czechs and Ukrainians. In the first phase, a list of basic Czech-Ukrainian phrases was published. In the next phases the goal is to create tools for practicing them and to become a signpost for other tools and materials that will help with learning Ukrainian and Czech.

I have joined the MovApp team as a UX / UI designer, my main goal being to build a comprehensive and consistent design system and creating solutions that answered the calls from the application's users - children as well as adults.

Research phase

The team has got quite an extensive database of feedback interviews, users' notes and also a live contact with a centre for Ukrainian children, where the app is to be released on a touch-based kiosk for the children to play with and use as an educational tool. This has been a rich source of feedback and new ideas to incorporate into the system, in order to:

a) make the app as accessible as possible

b) realize the differences between a child and an adult user and act on them appropriately

c) work with the specifics of language learning in a digital environment

d) constantly expand and improve the feature base to keep the app fun, interesting and challenging

Web application design - exercises

Due to the fact that there's a large market gap regarding language training applications for Ukrainians in Czechia, MovApp has focused on developing a web / mobile application in order to fill that gap and offer people from Ukraine an easy but thorough way to practice languages, learn phrases and improve their knowledge of the Czech language.

The design approach was mobile-first, in order to keep the design simple and compact. It has then been adjusted and expanded for the desktop view.

Final version:

As a result of design iterations (and the mobile-first approach), we have finally decided to go with a more compact layout that goes well with the mobile design:
